LASIK Recovery Timeline: What to Expect Day by Day

Thinking about LASIK? You’ve probably done your homework on what it does for your vision, but what about the recovery? The good news is that LASIK has one of the quickest healing timelines among all eye surgeries. Still, knowing what to expect each day can ease anxiety and help you plan ahead.

Day 1: Right After Surgery
As soon as your procedure wraps up, you’ll notice a difference—most patients see better immediately, though things may look a little hazy. Burning, tearing and light sensitivity are common. You’ll go home with eye shields, a list of drops and strict orders to rest your eyes. No screens, no rubbing and no driving. Just nap, hydrate and let your eyes do the work.

Day 2: Getting Clearer
The next morning, many people wake up with noticeably clearer vision. You’ll head to your first post-op check where your surgeon will assess healing. You may feel a little dry or gritty, but eye drops can help alleviate this sensation. You can usually go back to non-strenuous work or school but take it easy. Sunglasses are still a must outdoors.

Days 3–4: Settling In
By now, most of the discomfort should have faded and your vision should continue to stabilize. You might still notice halos around lights or slight fluctuations in clarity, but this is normal. Continue using your prescribed drops exactly as directed and avoid wearing eye makeup, swimming in pools, hot tubs or engaging in activities that may cause irritation.

Days 5–7: Back in the Groove
You’re likely feeling more like yourself by now. Vision should be sharp for most daily tasks, including reading and driving. Still, your eyes are healing internally, so continue all post-op care as instructed. If you work in a dry or dusty environment, wear protective glasses. And if your eyes feel dry after extended screen time, use artificial tears.

Week 2 and Beyond: Vision Locked In
Around the 2-week mark, many patients report that they’ve reached their new normal. Vision feels crisp and steady. You may need a few more weeks to reach the final result, especially if you had a high prescription or other eye issues at the start. Always attend follow-up visits and report any lingering symptoms.

LASIK recovery tends to progress quickly, but it’s still a surgical procedure and your eyes deserve the best care during the healing process. Stick with the plan, protect your eyes and celebrate your new, glasses-free life one day at a time.
