Dropless Cataract Surgery: Convenience & Reliability
After cataract surgery, patients are required to use prescription eye drops 3-4 times a day for 4-6 weeks in order to reduce post-surgery complications. As you can imagine, this is a time consuming process and it can be easy to forget to administer the right dosage of drops every day. At Fisher-Swale-Nicholson Eye Center, we offer a solution: dropless cataract surgery.
Dropless cataract surgery is a technique where injections of antibiotics and steroids are administered inside the eye while you are still under anesthesia (so you won’t experience any pain). These medications take the place of post-surgery, daily eye drops, helping to prevent vision-threatening complications such as eye infections (endophthalmitis) or cystoid macular edema.
Dr. Swale and Dr. Franklin are among the few eye doctors in Illinois who offer dropless cataract surgery. We use Tri-Moxi injections, a combination of steroid (triamcinolone) and antibiotic (moxifloxacin) that is injected into the vitreous gel inside your eye after your doctor has inserted your new intraocular lens (IOL).
Benefits of Dropless Cataract Surgery
- Convenience: you won’t have to adhere to a strict eye drop schedule every day, struggle with opening eye drop bottles and keep track of your dosing regimen
- Reliability: the drops are absorbed by your eye over the month after surgery so you won’t have to worry about putting the right dosage of medication into your eyes every day
- Cost savings: the cost of these injections is covered in your surgery center fee so you’ll save money by not having to purchase eye drops (up to $400 for some patients)
- Safety: this process can lower your risk of complications such as infection or retinal swelling
Most of our dropless cataract surgery patients are very satisfied with the outcome of this technique and appreciate the fact that daily eye drops are not needed after surgery.
