What does an ophthalmologist do?

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD) who specializes in eye and vision care. An ophthalmologist is licensed to practice medicine and surgery–and in that capacity diagnoses and treats all eye diseases and conditions, performs eye surgery, prescribes medication, and fits eyeglasses and contact lenses to correct vision problems.

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a common vision condition that causes blurred or shadowed vision at any distance due to the irregular shape of the cornea.

Astigmatism can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, laser vision correction, and EVO Visian ICL™.

What is farsightedness?

Farsightedness (or hyperopia) is a common vision condition where faraway objects are clear, but those nearby are blurry.

Farsightedness can be corrected with LASIK, Clear Lens Exchange (CLE), glasses, and contact lenses.

What is Clear Lens Exchange?

Clear Lens Exchange (CLE) may be a better option than LASIK, PRK, or Visian ICL for people who are currently using bifocals/readers or those who are farsighted. Clear Lens Exchange replaces your eye’s clear natural lens with an artificial lens to correct your distance and near vision, reducing your need for reading glasses or bifocals.

During CLE surgery, a small incision is made at the edge of the cornea using the LENSAR laser. The natural lens is then broken into small pieces and removed. The artificial lens is inserted in its place where it will reside permanently.

What is Visian ICL?

Visian Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) provides High Definition Vision, which is sharper and clearer than most other forms of vision correction. Patients with nearsightedness and/or astigmatism may be candidates for this next generation in vision correction.

The Visian ICL is gently placed through a tiny incision in the cornea. Due to its flexibility, the lens is folded and inserted through a self-sealing micro-incision allowing for a quick recovery. The Visian ICL unfolds and is then positioned behind the iris and in front of the natural lens of the eye. Once placed in the eye, the patient will not feel or see the Visian ICL, but they will notice the dramatic improvement in their vision.

What is nearsightedness?

Nearsightedness (or myopia) is a common vision condition where you can see things near you clearly, but objects far away are blurry.

Nearsightedness can be corrected with LASIK, PRK, Visian ICL, glasses, and contact lenses.

What is LASIK surgery?

LASIK is an acronym for laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis. The name refers to the use of a laser to reshape the cornea without invading the adjacent cell layers.

LASIK is the most common and well-known vision correction surgery. During LASIK, your surgeon uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea to improve the way the eye focuses light rays onto the retina. The surgeon creates a thin flap in your cornea and applies the laser treatment beneath.

Advanced technology to individualize your vision correction, CustomVue Wavefront technology is groundbreaking because it has the potential to improve not only how much you can see, but also how well you can see. With custom LASIK, your eye’s ability to focus light is measured and a 3-D map is created that demonstrates irregularities. Information contained in the map guides the laser in customizing the treatment to reshape your eye’s corneal surface so that these irregularities can be corrected. Traditional LASIK procedures cannot treat these irregularities.

What is photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)?

Photorefractive keratectomy is a no-flap alternative to LASIK.

The PRK laser gently removes the outer layer and reshapes the cornea. PRK gives the patient safer surgical options while still providing the same laser technology and outcomes as LASIK.

This procedure avoids the cutting of a flap on the corneal tissue which in return minimizes potential flap complications in the future. The cutting of the flap increases the risk of intraoperative complications, and it can also cause increased dryness in patients who already have dry eyes before the procedure.

The surgeon can treat the corneal surface to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

What happens to the eyes as we age?

After you pass the milestone age of 40, the lens inside the eye begins to lose its ability to change shape – a process called presbyopia — the natural deterioration of near vision caused by loss of flexibility in the eye’s lens as one ages.

A good and simple treatment for presbyopia is reading glasses. Other patients may opt for Clear Lens Exchange–laser-assisted surgery that replaces your eye’s clear natural lens with an artificial lens to correct your distance and near vision, reducing your need for reading glasses or bifocals.

What is dry eye?

Dry eye is a syndrome characterized by corneal dryness due to deficient tear production.

What causes dry eye?

Dry eye is a chronic disease in which our eyes do not produce enough tears or enough quality tears due to a disruption in one or more of the three layers of our tear film.

What are they symptoms of dry eye?

The signs and symptoms of dry eye vary from person to person and range in severity. Environmental agents, medications, hormone changes and our day-to-day activities are contributing factors.

How do you treat dry eye?

The primary method of treating dry eye has been the use of artificial tears. Over the past several years, however, different diagnostic tests have been used to diagnose dry eye and introduce new treatment methods to manage the disease better.

If you suffer from dry eye or any of the signs or symptoms of dry eye, schedule a Dry Eye Evaluation with Fisher-Swale-Nicholson Eye Center today. Our staff uses the latest technology and treatments available and customizes treatments to each patient’s individual needs. Contact us today at (815) 932-2020 to get relief from your dry eye symptoms.

What is a cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens inside the eye which leads to a decrease in vision.

What is cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is the removal of the eye’s cloudy lens and replacing it with an intraocular lens implant.

What is laser-assisted cataract surgery?

We offer our patients the most advanced technology available in cataract surgery. Laser-assisted cataract surgery with Lensar Laser is a revolutionary technique to remove a cataract more accurately and make intelligent blade-free incisions.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is frequently called the “sneak thief of sight,” because there are often no symptoms before severe vision loss occurs. This is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. An estimated 1 out of 50 adults are affected by this disease. Loss of sight from glaucoma is preventable with early detection and treatment by your optometrist or ophthalmologist. Glaucoma is a series of diseases of the optic nerve. The optic nerve is the messenger between the eyes and the brain. When it becomes damaged, vision is impaired.

How is glaucoma treated?

Glaucoma is usually treated in-office with prescription eye drops and by laser procedures known as Argon Laser Trabeculectomy (ALT) or Selective Laser Trabeculectomy (SLT).

Does Medicare cover outpatient surgery?

Part B of Medicare covers outpatient surgery if medically necessary. Talk to your healthcare provider to see if he or she thinks Medicare will judge the surgery to be necessary.

Rules about what Medicare covers can be confusing. For more information call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or visit the website at http://www.medicare.gov. You can also call your local Social Security office to ask questions about Medicare.

Which surgeries can be performed at Solutions in Sight Laser and Surgery Suite?

The surgical procedures performed at an ambulatory surgery center are lower-risk procedures like CustomVue Lasik, PRK, and Visian ICL. procedures. The specific training our doctors maintain in minimally invasive technologies has made it possible to move these surgical treatments out of hospitals and into more convenient and cost-effective outpatient facilities.
