Cornea

What is the Cornea?

The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface at the front of the eye, serving as its primary focusing lens. It helps bend and direct light into the eye, enabling clear vision. A healthy cornea is essential for optimal eyesight, as it protects internal eye structures and significantly contributes to the eye’s focusing power. When the shape and strength of the cornea become compromised, conditions such as keratoconus can develop, impacting visual clarity and overall eye health.

Corneal Eye Disease Symptoms

Corneal eye diseases can significantly affect your vision and overall eye comfort.

Common symptoms include:

  • Blurred or cloudy vision
  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
  • Excessive tearing
  • Redness
  • The sensation of a foreign object in the eye

In more advanced cases, you may notice visual halos, glare, or even vision loss. Because these symptoms can mimic other eye conditions, it’s essential to seek prompt evaluation and care from a corneal specialist.
