Cataract Evaluation
At Fisher-Swale-Nicholson Eye Center, the cataract evaluation process is divided into two appointments to ensure you receive thorough, personalized care.
The first appointment is the pretesting visit. This includes all preliminary testing required for cataract surgery, an overview of the treatment options available at our office, and a complete workup if you are a new patient. This step helps us prepare for your full evaluation and ensures you are well informed about your choices.
The second appointment is the cataract evaluation itself. During this visit, which typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours, we perform a series of pain-free tests to assess your vision and overall eye health. These include a visual acuity test to measure your distance and near vision, a refractive error measurement to determine your best corrected vision, an assessment of your natural lens to identify the presence, severity, and location of cataracts, and a comprehensive review of your ocular health. Based on the results of these initial tests, your doctor may recommend additional testing if other eye conditions are suspected.
As part of the evaluation, your eyes will be dilated for a retinal examination. This allows the doctor to get a clear view of the back of your eye. Since dilation can cause temporary blurred vision and light sensitivity, we recommend that you arrange for someone to drive you home after the appointment.
