What does an optometrist do?

An optometrist is an eye doctor that has earned the degree of Doctor of Optometry (OD). Optometrists are licensed and professionally trained to diagnose and treat visual defects, as well as eye disorders and diseases. They examine a patient’s eyes for both vision and health problems and can correct refractive errors by prescribing contact lenses or eyeglasses.  Optometrists can manage many medical conditions of the eye ranging from glaucoma and hypertension to keratoconus and dry eye disease.
